Styx

Styx, sailing to paradise.

TW4, a band comprised of Dennis DeYoung, John Panozzo, Chuck Panozzo, Tom Nardin, and James “JY” Young signed with wooden nickel records in 1972, and renamed the group Styx. They released four albums under the wooden nickel label.

In 1975 the band signed with A&M records. They released the album “Equinox” and prepared a nationwide tour. The guitarist John Curulewski quit the band on the eve of the tour and was replaced by Tommy Shaw.

Styx longer tracks were aired on album oriented FM stations, which quickly earned them a solid fan base. In 1977 they released their “breakthrough” album “The Grand Illusion”. It quickly went triple platinum charting singles such as “Come Sail Away” which climbed to number six nationally.

In 1981 “Paradise Theater” was released. This rose to number one on the national album chart, and received lots of music video playtime on MTV. It spawned five singles, including two top ten hits.

In 1983 the dystopian rock opera “Kilroy Was Here” was released. The concert supporting this album was a theatric stage show. The music video for “Mr. Roboto” was heavily played. Following this album the band members explored solo careers. There were several reunion tours in the 1990s. They played Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Guitar Festival in 2004, 2007, and 2010.

In 1999 Dennis DeYoung left the band for the last time. After a law suit, and counter suit Tommy Shaw and James Young retained the Styx name, and DeYoung could no longer bill himself as “the voice of Styx”.
