Charlie Wilson (born January 29, 1953) is best known for being the lead singer of the Gap Band, known for hits, such as “Oops Upside Your Head” and “You Dropped a Bomb on Me.” While on tour in the 80s, the Tulsa, Oklahoma born singer and his two brothers performed concert shows and festival shows to spread their funky sound. After the group’s breakup, Wilson battled drug and alcohol addiction for which he sought treatment during the mid-90s. In 2005, while under management of P Music Group, Wilson released his solo album Charlie Last Name Wilson. The album featured productions by R. Kelly, and Justin Timberlake. Wilson’s second album, Uncle Charlie, was released in 2009. The album debuted at number 1 on the Billboard R&B/Hip Hop Chart and received two Grammy nominations. Just Charlie, Wilson’s album released in 2010, produced the song “You Are.” Charlie backed up the song with a music video, and it remained number 1 on the Billboard Urban Adult Contemporary Chart for 13 weeks. His talent, showmanship and tenacity resulted in a legendary career and in February 2010 it helped Wilson achieve an NAACP Image Award nomination for Outstanding Male Artist.
